The Panchmukhi Hanuman Temple in Rameshwaram is famous for its unique idol of Hanuman with five faces, representing various avatars. The five faces are said to be of Hanuman, Narasimha, Garuda, Varaha, and Hayagriva.
According to legend, Hanuman assumed this Panchmukhi (five-faced) form to kill Ahiravan, a demon who had kidnapped Rama and Lakshmana. The temple is an important part of the Rameshwaram pilgrimage circuit.
